Local Arsenal fans find a Home and Community

To see evidence of the growing popularity of soccer across the United States, look no further than McDonough’s when Premier League club Arsenal is playing. That’s where you will find a passionate collection of Savannah-area fans who embrace the nickname “Gooners” bestowed on Arsenal’s supporters.

The group is organized by lifelong Arsenal fan Jesse Aguirre. He sought out a Gooners group while living in Virginia Beach and fell in love with organized supporter culture. After moving back to Savannah, he partnered with friend Nick Wright to create a new community of Gooners. They quickly found a welcoming home at McDonough’s, where previously separated Arsenal fans joined them for watch parties.

The grassroots group has swelled to nearly 900 followers on Instagram since its founding, which Aguirre attributes to the openness of its members.

“I would say it’s a fun and friendly community where fans can talk all things Arsenal while drinking their favorite beverage,” Aguirre said. “We typically show the games on a large projector with surround-sound audio. It’s also a great place to meet new people and make friends.”

Even four-legged Arsenal supporters can find a home at the watch parties.

“I always look forward to attending the Arsenal watch parties with my dog ‘Sugar,’ since McDonough’s is a pet-friendly space,” said group member Derrick. “It’s a good time to chat with fellow fans and have a drink or two.”

The growing population of Savannah brings a diverse range of supporters to the local group.

“As a Londoner studying at SCAD, it was amazing to find my community of fellow Arsenal fans where we could support the team together!” said group member Akaash. “I’m really glad I was able to meet these guys and make new friends.”

Aguirre encourages local Arsenal supporters or anyone curious about soccer culture to drop by McDonough’s and experience it firsthand.

“We are focused on growing the community and driving turnout, so we welcome everyone to attend and invite their friends!”
