Savannah Clovers Win The NISA Independent Cup Southern Region Championship

The Savannah Clovers are the 2023 Southern Region Champions of the NISA Independent Cup.  The Clovers defeated Soda City FC 2-0 in the Final of the Cup this past Saturday, July 22 at their home field, Memorial Stadium.  This is the first trophy for the club and could be a potential turning point in the season for the Clovers despite some of their losses.

The two goals were scored by winger Alex Ierides, in the 16th and 53rd minutes of the game.  Midfielder Ahdan Tait sent a long ball into space for Ierides to run onto.  Ierides beat his defender to the ball and then found himself  1v1 with the Soda City keeper, he then took a quick touch past him to create an open lane to goal for himself.  Early in the second half, the Clovers were awarded a corner kick and although it was initially sent too long, winger Benjamin Mackay appeared at the end of it for a re-service.  Mackay sent the ball back into the box to find defender Ford Hunt at the opposite back post.  A Soda City FC player attempted to clear the ball, but Ierides got his head on it to place it in the bottom left corner to bring the Clovers up by another goal.

The Clover’s next match will be an exhibition match against the Jax Lion’s FC from Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, July 27th at Memorial Stadium. The match is set to Kickoff at 7:00 P.M. and will include a special $5 entry. Fans that wish to purchase tickets can do so at www.savannahclovers.com/tickets
