Savannah, Ga - A combined crowd of over 500 witnessed 2 Victories for the Clovers program that marked the debut of soccer at Memorial Stadium. CFC2, the Clovers Reserves Team, defeated Richmond Hill Soccer Club U19 by a score of 2-1. Trent Garbett will go down in history as scoring the first ever goal at the newly rebuilt Memorial Stadium. Early in the Second Half, RHSC U19 pulled one back on a spectacular diving header. Later in the Second Half CFC2 earned a PK after a push in the box. Newly signed Robel Bekele tucked the PK away to give CFC2 the lead and ultimately the 2-1 win over RHSC U19
For the second match of the day, the Savannah Clovers kicked off the Fall 2018 UPSL Season by welcoming Union FC from Monroe, NC. Early in the match, Henry Bane unleashed a 25 yard volley in the 7th minute of play, which was saved comfortably by the Union FC Keeper. The breakthrough for the Clovers would come in the 32nd minute. Danny Reddin, the former Shamrock Rover, assisted Kiki Carcamo for the only goal of the game. Carcamo beat 2 Union FC defenders and slotted the ball past the Keeper at the near post. In the 45th min of play, Union FC found enough space on the right side to get off a shot, but Clovers Keeper Ali Bassir managed to cover the far post just enough to see the low shot go wide. 1 minute later, Bassir was again called into action and made a point blank save to deny the equalizing goal by Union FC. The second half saw an increase in pressure by both teams. In the 59th min, Union FC earned a free kick just outside the box steaming from a take down by Defender Brion Kelly which resulted in a yellow card. Bassir’s wall did the job and prevented the a goal from the opportunity. In the 67th min, the Clovers earned a corner from a cross that deflected off a Union FC Defender. Captain Jay DeAlmeida got on the end of resulting corner, but his low shot fizzed just wide of the far post. The Clovers would go on to maintain the clean sheet and earn a 1-0 victory over Union FC.
The Clovers will be back at Memorial Stadium on October 7th as they take on San Lee FC. Kickoff at set for 4:30pm. Wear your green and make some noise! Tickets available now!
